I cut very thin strips of black
decal film for the seperation lines, to represent the flying surfaces. I
think these strips were about .016" wide. It took some
"DO-N" to get them on straight !!

I drew a large drawing
of the Rolls Royce logo, then reduced it down, and printed it on
"Bare-Metal" foil. I found two sizes for the Bardahl logo's on
a decal sheet at the hobby shop. I made my own prop logos. I
typed the owner's name; (Ed Weiner) on my IBM typewriter, then reduced
it down and printed it on clear decal film. Under his name was the words "Los
Angeles;" I think ? These were reduced to size and applied.

For the canopy I made a
"Plaster of Paris" mold and then used that mold to make a
canopy

After the
model was finished, I wrote a guy, and he sent me some photos of
#49. Lo and behold, I put on the wrong shades of colors on
the prop blades, and it seemed that they had a special prop logo to
boot! Oh well.....so much for modeling. You must remember,
there's not much information on many aircraft, so you do the best you
can; (see additional photos of real aircraft in it's 1966, and 1967
color markings)

Matt and I were ready to go to the
"1989 IPMS/USA San Diego, CA National Convention." We
are both national judges, so we look real good at each others models.
Matt says "Rodney, your main gears are sagging, better fix them,
or you will not win a first place, which is the only award to win, as second
doesn't count." I had no time to build a new one! I guess I thinned
down the main-gear struts too much, which made the axle and yoke bend
inward slightly.
Yes, the model took a second
place at the show, however my model beat out the "Master", Mr.
George Lee. The model that took first place, was really not a first
place winner, nor was my model. George should have won first, and the
first place model should have placed third. I have written detailed
information on the first place winner's photo.
First
Place.........Tom Walsh |
Third place
winner.....George Lee |

Second
Place Winner......Rodney Williams |

As mentioned, I sold the model to
a friend, along with my 1/32 scale F2G-1D #57 air-racer, and a 1/48 scale
F-86. They sit in his display case in Guatemala City, Guatemala.
This is my story, hope you enjoy
it! Happy modeling
Rodney
