Pan American Airlines 747SP

This is the 1:144 scale Welsh Models 747SP in Pan Am livery. I built this vacuform kit in the fall of 1996. It was only the third vacuform kit I had ever built, after the 1:72 Rareplane AJ-2 Savage USN bomber and 1:144 Welsh Models 757-200 in Caledonian livery. The 747SP has always been my favorite 747, so this was a labor of love. Welsh Models are very good kits.

Almost everything you need is included in the kit: Liveries Unlimited decals, white metal landing gear and resin engines. The parts fit together very well, just be careful when sanding out the pieces. The only scratch building I needed to do was boxing in the landing gear bays. Not the hardest task, but I wish Welsh Models would take a cue from Dynavector and provide vacuform landing gear bays. Paint job is very simple: Testors gloss white, SNJ, Testors Voodoo Gray (for the Boeing Gray) and Tamiya metallic gray for the Coroguard sections of the wings.

This kit will be available again this fall from Welsh Models, but not in Pan Am livery.
