Some
things can be said for taking the "easy" way out. I thought it was the
case when I started modifying the 1/32ish Sea King from Sky Pilots. They come in
US Navy and USAF (?) markings. To do them up to better represent a Canadian
example takes me roughly 10-15 hrs and a bit of sweat. And sandpaper. And a
razor saw. And paint. Oh, and patience...
First I
disassembled the fuselage to get at the cockpit. The skylight windows are painted
clear green, and the cockpit gets painted and corrected- the Cyclic sticks are
upside-down! Then I reassemble, install a resin radome and crash beacon
(mastered from wood carvings) and paint. Decals were an issue for the grey
version (I was hand-painting), but now I'm getting them custom made by Belcher
Bits. I used Belcher's 1/48 scale set for the hi-vis version to good effect.
All in all, it's as
much a toy as a model, which means they last more than 2 weeks with kids around.
