Silly Week 2005

After the near impact of 2029, several organizations realised the potential for disaster and began the construction of a fleet of interceptors designed to hunt down dangerous Near Earth Objects (NEO) and destroy them. Named Asteroid Tracking And Reconaissance: Intercept, they were equipped with Particle Attack Cannon (Manual) and the latest in Q-Bert navigational systems. A Positional Orbital Navigation Gear fit was later installed for additional guidance ability. Using both PONG and Q-Bert to locate the asteroids, the ATARI's would close in and fire their PAC (man)s and eliminate their targets. Losses were occasional, and reports were made of "flying saucers" lurking amongst the asteroids and attacking the ATARIs, but no firm evidence was ever obtained.

An interesting side bar: Funding was not forthcoming at first for the ATARI program from world governments, so the initial funds were obtained by installing ATARI flight simulators in public places, and charging a minimal fee to try them out.  The world owes its safety to the pocket change of adolescents!
