This is my first real
plastic model kit. The Flanker has always been my favorite aircraft & when I
saw this kit I just could not resist & had to pick it up. The model was huge
& it really dwarfed all the other 1:48 kits in the hobby shop. I decided to
use this paint scheme because it is very rare amongst Flanker modelers &
seems to be the first of its kind on ARC. Modeling paints are not easily
available over here so I had to make do with whatever I could find. The gray is
the base primer gray. I airbrushed the flat black & white on top of that.
Since this is my first model I made lots of mistakes. I really messed up the
paint job in some areas & broke the front & one of the rear landing gear
struts. I had to find a workaround for all the mistakes that I made but
eventually the final product was great.

I
got the burnt metal effect on the engines by a really unique idea. First I
painted the engines silver. Then I took a normal AAA battery & split it
open. I found some black powder inside (explosive so watch out) & I scraped
it all out. Then I evenly spread it over the silver engines & got an awesome
effect. The most difficult parts of the models were the assembly of the front
landing gear & the painting of the canopy. The problem with the canopy is
that if you mess it up then you don’t get a second chance. I really messed up
my canopy & while trying to fix it I broke it. I must commend academy for
their excellent customer service because after I told them about my problem,
within 2 weeks they sent me 2 spare canopies free of charge. That’s the story
about my model, I hope you like it.
