The
subject of my diorama is Hasegawa’s 1/48 scale Hawker typhoon Mk 1B, being
serviced by RAF personnel on one of their bases during those dark years of WW2. The markings used were those supplied in the kit, that is HH–N
EK139 of 175 Squadron.
The
cowling is in the opened position to show a 24 cylinder Sabre Napier engine. So
are the gun bays on one of the wings also to show the two Hispano cannon.

I
started by cutting open the top and sides of the engine cowling, scratch built
the firewall and fitted an engine supplied by ENGINES AND THINGS of Canada.
Before the engine was painted I removed most of the superficial detail and
replaced this with various thicknesses of copper wire and brass tubing, to give
it a more realistic look.
One of
the wings was also opened up. The
gun bays, covers and cannon were scratch built from various thicknesses of
EVERGREEN plastic card. When these were painted and fitted in place, I added
some ammunition belts from EXTRA TECH. The rest of the fuselage was a straight
forward build.
The
model was painted in the traditional RAF colours of two greys and a green, using
TESTORS enamels.

Airfield
accessories used in the base include mesh wire from VERLINDEN PRODUCTIONS,
barbed wire from ABER, the brick wall from HEKI and the two RAF figures come
from ICM.
