F-14B 'Victory-207'

Silly Week 2008

Ok, for those of you who have not read James Huston's Flash Point, you owe it to yourself to go have a look. The book basically boils down to a ancient Islamic assassin order taking on the US, which results in alot of action being flown by VF-103 out in the Med, concluding with an attack on the ancient fortress of Alamut in western Iran. The initial assessment says that the Navy's GBU-16 or 24's wont penetrate the 100ft thick stone covering, but a -103 pilot gets the idea to mount the Deep Throat (GBU-28) on the F-14s. 2 bombs are rushed to NAF Signonella, built & then loaded onto a COD for the Carrier, then mounted to a pair of F-14s.

This idea hit me when I was considering what exactly to do with a Revell 1/100 F-14 kit, now I have my work cut-out for me: take this kit, convert it into a passable B, add a GBU-28 and then do-up in VF-103 garb. Sounds easy enough. . . I started by grabbing a couple of spare F-16 burner cans in the same scale (at least it looks the part) and got’em clipped & sanded down to fit. The Jolly Roger markings were donated by an old Testors F-14 kit, as well as the wing glove pylons. Most of the weapons came from the stash, with the exception of the GBU-28, which was scratched by combining a 1/100 LGB seeker head & tail unit with the body of a leftover Isracast 1/32 Python-3 AAM. First time I’ve ever done something like that and I’m quite pleased with the results. Oh by the way, this whole project was completed in under a week for the What-If Modelers (www.whatifmodelers.com) annual 1-Week Group Build.
