1/48 F-16C Big Mouth Vipers decal sheet
Product #48089

Review by Steve Bamford on Mar 3 2005

This sheet includes the markings for three different F-16's with the Big Mouth intakes serving with the 31st Fighter Wing at Aviano AB in Italy and the 52nd Fighter wing at Spangdahlem AB in Germany.

Jeff Stoermer was a big help with reference photos to make this sheet possible.

The first 2 jets are Aviano birds with the 31st Fighter Wing.  They sport the same paint scheme with  the exception of the colour band a the top of the tail and the artwork on the tail.  On of these jets has tail art featuring the black shape of Italy.

The third jet is aircraft # 91416 with the 52nd Fighter Wing out of Spangdahlem AB in Germany.  This jet has had the CCIP upgrades.

The decals are contained on one decal sheets and are flawlessly printed and in perfect register.

The 2 pages of instructions include 4 view colour drawings showing camo scheme and decal placement.  They also explain the CCIP program in more detail.  Paint colours are listed in FS#'s as well as Testors, Gunze Sangyo, Xtracolor and Xtracrylics.

CCIP is the Common Configuration Implementation Program and is being done by Lockheed Martin to Block 40/42/50/52 aircraft in the US inventory.   The mods are being done to standardize all cockpits and capabilities in all the aircraft.  The biggest external difference is the APX-133 air-to-air blades in front of the windscreen.  You can buy a resin conversion for this at www.shull24.com  This conversion is pretty straight forward and requires cutting a chunk out of the kit and gluing in the resin part (seen in the image to the right).

I'd like to thank Twobobs for the review sample.
